The Peru Guide

How much does a private Peru trip cost?

A private 10-day trip to Peru with Destination Peru starts at about $5,495 per person, two sharing, with Inkaterra hotels, a private guide, Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, Cusco and three nights in the Amazon. Shorter private journeys on the core route start at $3,295 for five days and $4,395 for seven. Flights, insurance and gratuities are extra, and your written proposal confirms the total.

What a private Peru trip costs

Our four priced journeys are built on the same core route through the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco, with Inkaterra hotels, a private bilingual guide for the listed visits, Machu Picchu entry, trains and private transfers included. The difference between them is time, and in one case the Amazon.

A sample 10-day trip and its price

Exploration of Peru, from $5,495 per person, is our ten-day journey and the one most people mean when they ask what a “full” Peru trip costs. It combines the rainforest and the Andes in one route:

  • Night 1 — Lima, Wyndham Grand Costa del Sol Lima Airport, welcome dinner.
  • Nights 2–4 — Amazon, Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, three nights with the lodge’s naturalist guides, boat excursions and night walks.
  • Nights 5–6 — Sacred Valley, Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba. Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray with your private guide.
  • Nights 7–8 — Machu Picchu Pueblo, Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo. A full day at Machu Picchu with your guide and lunch at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge.
  • Night 9 — Cusco, JW Marriott El Convento, farewell dinner.
  • Day 10 — Transfer to Cusco airport.

The domestic flights Lima–Puerto Maldonado and Puerto Maldonado–Cusco are not in the starting price; we book them for you at cost plus US$50 per round trip. For two people, a realistic all-in figure for this trip, before international flights, is the starting price plus domestic flights, insurance and tips.

What moves the price up or down

Hotels. Inkaterra properties are the standard in our journeys. Moving to Belmond (Sanctuary Lodge at Machu Picchu, Monasterio in Cusco, Rio Sagrado in the valley) is the single biggest upgrade; a different room category at the same hotel is the smallest.

Trains. Vistadome and Inca Rail are included. The Belmond Hiram Bingham, with lunch, music and an open bar, replaces the standard train at a premium and is the most requested upgrade for anniversaries and milestone trips.

The Amazon. A lodge stay (Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica) is priced into Exploration of Peru. An Aqua Expeditions river cruise in the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve costs more and is priced on request in our Amazon & Andes journey.

The Inca Trail. Adding our private five-day Inca Trail trek, operated by Inca Trek by Destination Peru, starts at $2,995 per person and replaces the train days with four days of walking and three nights of camping with your own guide, cook and porters. Permits are limited and sell out early.

Group size and season. Prices are per person, two sharing; a third or fourth traveler lowers the per-person cost of guides and transfers. May to October is the drier, busier season; hotel rates and availability are tightest from June to August.

Open days and extras. Rainbow Mountain, Huayna Picchu or Montaña permits, cooking classes and extra valley nights are priced separately and confirmed in your proposal.

Booking and payment

A US$500 per person deposit secures your journey, and the balance is due 60 days before arrival. You can pay by major credit card with no card fee, or by bank transfer. We check Machu Picchu availability before charging the deposit; if entry cannot be secured afterwards, our terms provide new dates or a full deposit refund. Once permits and trains are bought, deposits are non-refundable, so we ask every guest to carry travel insurance. Destination Peru E.I.R.L. operates your journey in Peru; Inca Trek LLC, a Utah company, is the contracting company and merchant of record.

A few useful answers

Before you go.

How much does a 7-day trip to Peru cost?

Our seven-day Signature Peru journey starts at $4,395 per person, two sharing, with two nights each in the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu Pueblo and Cusco, Inkaterra hotels, a private guide, Machu Picchu entry, trains and transfers. Flights, insurance and gratuities are extra.

Is Machu Picchu entry included?

Yes. Every journey includes Machu Picchu entry for a confirmed date, time and circuit, plus the train and bus to reach it. Huayna Picchu and Montaña permits are available on request and priced separately when included.

Are flights included in the price?

No. International and domestic flights are not included. We can book domestic flights for US$50 per round trip and international flights for US$100 per round trip, plus the fare.

Is it cheaper to book Peru hotels and trains myself?

Sometimes on paper. What you take on is timing Machu Picchu entry, train and bus tickets around each other, permits that sell out, and the logistics between regions. Our price includes a private guide, private transfers, oxygen in vehicles and hotels, and a Cusco team on call 24/7 while you travel.

How far ahead should I book a private Peru trip?

Six to nine months for travel between May and October, when Machu Picchu entry times and the better hotels fill first. The Inca Trail should be booked as soon as permits for your travel year are released. Shorter notice is often possible outside high season; we check availability before taking a deposit.
