The Peru Guide

How many days do you need in Peru?

Start with what you want to see and the time you have available. Five days can cover a focused Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco itinerary. Seven or nine days give you more time on that route. Our ten-day Exploration of Peru also includes the Amazon, with more travel between regions.

Seven days for Signature Peru

Signature Peru is our starting recommendation for the core route when the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco are the purpose of the trip. Its seven days and six nights give you two nights in each place, in that order. You arrive and depart through Cusco; international travel time sits outside that plan.

That pattern makes room for the named valley visits, an early Machu Picchu visit, the private Cusco tour and an open day. It also gives Inkaterra a real place in the experience, instead of treating a carefully chosen hotel as somewhere you only arrive to sleep.

Five days when time is short

Essential Peru is our shortest journey: five days and four nights, with one night in the Sacred Valley, two at Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo and one at Inkaterra La Casona in Cusco. You visit Ollantaytambo before the train and enjoy a private Cusco tour after your return.

A four-night stay keeps the focus on a few important experiences. Essential Peru has no full open day in Cusco and does not include every Sacred Valley visit from Signature Peru. If you want Pisac, Chinchero, Moray and time for Maras, choose Signature Peru or add a valley night.

What two more days change

Peru in Depth gives you three nights in the Sacred Valley, two at Machu Picchu Pueblo and three in Cusco. The extra valley day spreads the sightseeing out and leaves room to add an experience. The extra Cusco night creates a second open day.

Those open days are yours to use. Explore independently, ask us to arrange something specific, or stay longer over lunch. Optional excursions cost extra and depend on availability and suitability. We leave that time for you.

Add destinations as extensions

For Lima, start by considering two extra nights, then check your international arrival time. A late landing does not create a full sightseeing day. Food, art and a guided city introduction deserve usable time, not a rushed connection. Read our Lima guide for the kinds of experiences we can add.

Exploration of Peru, our ten-day journey, includes an airport night in Lima, three nights in the Amazon and the route through the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco. It offers more variety, with additional flights and transfers. Add days rather than compress the trip further when you want more time in each place.

A two-day Inca Trail experience fits into a tailored route or a two-day extension. We coordinate trail journeys through our own company, Inca Trek.

Choose the pace before the flight

  • Start with the nights you can spend in Peru, excluding international travel days.
  • Identify the moments that matter most: Machu Picchu, a train, food, family time or a celebration.
  • Keep enough nights near Machu Picchu for the visit to work with admission and rail availability.
  • Leave space in Cusco for your own interests and how you feel.

A US$500 per person deposit secures your journey; the balance is due 60 days before arrival. Starting prices are published on the individual journey pages; your proposal confirms the price and inclusions for your dates. We recommend LATAM and can book flights for you: US$50 per domestic round trip, US$100 per international round trip.

Send us your available dates, interests and the people traveling. We will help you choose Essential Peru, Signature Peru or Peru in Depth, then tailor the trip around what matters most to you.

A few useful answers

Before you go.

Do these journeys include international travel days?

No. The five-, seven- and nine-day sample itineraries begin and end in Cusco. Exploration of Peru begins with an airport overnight in Lima and finishes in Cusco. Allow for international travel and any extra nights your flights require.

Is seven days enough for Lima and the Amazon too?

We would add those regions separately, or look at Exploration of Peru, instead of removing nights from the core Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Cusco journey.

Which journey has the most free time?

Peru in Depth has two open days in Cusco. Signature Peru has one. Essential Peru has a private city tour and one overnight; add a night if you want a full open day.

Can you shorten or extend a journey?

Yes. These are starting points for private journeys. We check the effect on hotel nights, trains, admission and pacing before proposing a tailored route.
