Why Destination Peru began

An anniversary trip, a growing connection to Peru and the travelers who helped shape the idea for Destination Peru.

It started with people who needed help.

Peru first became part of my life on a trip for our first wedding anniversary. I went on to live and work there, and began helping travelers with permits and arrangements. Some of the people I helped had run into problems with their bookings. I enjoyed helping them sort things out, but I also saw the opportunity to plan the trip properly from the beginning. That work became Destination Peru in 2012.

A beautiful country. A complicated set of details.

Peru is an extraordinary place to travel, but planning it well takes care. Your train needs to leave on the right day, from the right station. Your Machu Picchu permit has to match your passport. Your hotel nights, entries and transfers need to work together. The systems are separate, and a small error can have a big effect on the trip.

What good planning makes possible.

The trains, tickets and transfers matter because they make the rest of the trip possible. Once guests arrive, I want them thinking about the place they’re visiting, the guide they’re talking with and the people they came with. Our job is to take care of the arrangements behind that experience.

Why I still love sharing Peru.

Peru became a place I call home, and I think of myself as an honorary Peruvian. Sharing Peru is still the part of this work I enjoy most. I love helping someone decide where to go, then hearing what the trip meant to them afterward. That is the reason I want us to keep getting better at what we do.
